I am certain there will be many a blog written about what footwear is best for various activities. What shoe is the best combination of waterproof and lightweight that can stand up to the rigors of an all day hike or everyday jogging, but is cozy enough to wear on a long flight or even longer bus ride. Hell I imagine I will write one of those. It is an important topic to cover. However, this is not that post. This is about something far more important. This is about flip flops.

 

As much as my jogging shoes are needed and will be used, my sandals will be just as vital. How else can I exude the laid back, beach ready persona I have tried so hard to cultivate for so many years if not for my Reef Fanning sandals.

 

These are definitely not your $1 foam flip flops. The pair you were given when you got your most recent pedicure. The Fannings are air-cushioned super sandals made for maximum wear-ability. They offer a snug but comfortable fit. I find that the tighter fit is good with sandals as it prevents foot fatigue in trying to keep the damn things from slipping off.

 

The straps are soft, but durable. It is a welcomed improvement from the malleable plastic ones that begin to chafe in just under 20 seconds of use. The upper part is firm, but soft enough to give the comfort of a sneaker. Also a durable rubber sole makes it so they can be worn on more than just the soft sand of a Caribbean beach. They are just rugged enough for prolonged every day wear.

 

The pair I chose are simple and black with a hint of the tan sole showing. But there are a range of colors should you want your feet to be wrapped in stark white, or nuclear yellow. They truly do offer a combination for everyone’s discerning tastes.

 

Being a Roamer means being active and being on the move. Except when the tractor beam like draw of a shaded hammock is too much to overcome. Being in a hammock means kicking off said footwear, your Reef Fanning sandals, and enjoying a cold beer – or a few cold beers. What better implement to open that pesky bottle than the very sandals you just slipped out of.

That’s right, the Fannings also come fully equipped with bottle openers built into the sole. Now is it a better selling feature than the comfort and toughness they offer – no. Is it handy if you would rather not try the ‘open-the-bottle-with-your-teeth’ trick. It sure is.

 

Overall the Reef Fanning sandals are a terrific everyday sandal that can take a beating while still keeping your feet feeling nice.

 

Note – Do not pay more than $25 for a pair. Lots of places sell them for easily double that, but even with the quickest online search they can be found at a much more reasonable price.
