Coconut Grove = Paradise
Oct 30, 2013
For our honeymoon back in 2009, Matt and I went to Costa Rica. Instead of doing the whole resort thing, we decided to backpack around the country. We made three main stops: La Fortuna, Monte Verde, and Dominical. We went in the off-season so most places were deserted and it was super cheap. Every place we went was better than the last.
Dominical is a tiny little surfer town, which is actually a haven for expats. We had made reservations for a small cabin at Coconut Grove. This place was BEAUTIFUL. Just picture a postcard. Seriously it’s like that.
The owners, Richard and Diane live in a gorgeous house right on the grounds. There is a big gazebo next to that, where you can take a yoga class in the morning, two guest houses, and some small cabins. A modest pool, complete with tiki hut and grill available for use is set among the cabin area.
We arrived and were informed that because we were honeymooners, we were being upgraded at no extra charge from the tiny cabin that we had reserved, to the guest house. It was incredible! The house had a beautiful full bath, a full kitchen, a living room with TV and air-conditioning, and a back porch with a hammock and rocking chairs. From the porch you could hear the ocean and just make it out at the end of the walkway that leads to the grove’s patch of private beach.
The owners were awesome, inviting us to drinks at their house with friends, and setting us up with reservations for some tours we wanted to do.
The cabin was clean and secure. Though one thing I realized about Costa Rica is that you have to just be okay with ants. They are everywhere and there’s nothing you can really do about it. The house wasn’t overrun with them by any means, but it wasn’t abnormal to see a trail from time to time. But maybe it’s just because of the time we went.
It was a bit of a walk to the “town”…maybe about 2 miles along a flat main road. With a bike, it would have been perfect. But it was just far enough that it made it a mission to get to and from, rather than just a quick pop to town.
It was one of my most favorite places I’ve ever been and I will be back someday.
