Traveling Partners: Are We Crazy?

Dec 31, 2013

There’s something about our little star-crossed roaming quartet that some may find surprising. We are not the closest of friends. What I mean by that is that we actually don’t hang out all that often, or dare I say know each other all that well. We’ve never lived together, or even traveled together for that matter.

The story is this…

Teague and Matt became good friends in Middle School and hung out a lot through high school, until they both went off to different colleges in 2000. There they sort of lost touch a bit, talking here and there, as is so common in those situations.

Fast forward to 2009, they ran into each other at our beloved Wegmans (supermarket) and made some plans to hang out. And boom. Back in touch.

A couple of years later, Teague and Jen got together. I remember him bringing her to meet us for the first time and loving her.

The thing is though, each couple has different circles of friends, and different lives. We only get together every couple of months on average. It’s the kind of friendship though, that every time we do see them, we think, “Why don’t we hang out more?! We love them!”

I am actually excited by the fact that we aren’t that close, but enjoy each other so much when we are together. The logic here, at least my logic anyway, is that we aren’t so close that we already know (or are sick of) each others quirks, rather we will get to know each other as we go, which is the best part!

We all have such different strengths and weaknesses that seem to compliment each other, but obviously there are bound to be heads butting at some point. And how we will handle those situations is still yet to be seen.

However, we have made sure to remain fully open and honest with each other thus far. And we have discussed in detail that if at any point in time, we don’t want to continue traveling together, that we will explain ourselves with hopefully no hard feelings, and move on separately.

So what do you think? Are we insane for forcing ourselves together in an adventure such as this RTW trip without being the bestest of friends? I think we'll be just fine, but I guess we shall see…
