Not All Reactions Will be Good Ones, and That's Okay

Nov 25, 2013

If you’re planning a RTW trip like this, don’t be surprised if and when you meet resistance. You may be more excited than ever, but your friends, family and acquaintances may not exactly share that excitement, at least not at first. This resistance most likely results from a combination of fear, misunderstanding, maybe some jealousy, differing viewpoints or life goals, and usually love. After all this is a pretty huge decision that strays from the norm.

And then there are all of the weddings, birthdays, births, and parties you will miss while gone. It is really difficult to know that you will be absent from so much that you want to be a part of. This is bound to be difficult for those you love too, and they may express that to you.

Obviously this is not how everyone will feel, but it’s something to be prepared for. As with anything in life, you should take those things into consideration when deciding if a trip like this is for you.

What I suggest is to let your friends and family find their enthusiasm for you gradually, and try not to get upset if they don’t seem to be as excited as you want them to be. Some may just not get it at first, or ever. But that’s okay. This isn’t something you’re doing for them after all. But most will probably surprise you

Above all else, don’t let any resistance shake your resolve. This is something I struggle with daily and probably will continue to struggle with throughout the trip. Keep reminding yourself that you’re doing this for valid reasons. Wanting something more out of life, wanting adventure and culture and experience is a very valid reason for traveling. And at the end of the day, you need to live the kind of life you want.
